HDBaseT

HDBaseT is a connectivity standard that enables the transmission of uncompressed ultra-high-definition (UHD) video, audio, Ethernet, control signals, and power over a single category cable (Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat7). It was developed by the HDBaseT Alliance, an industry group founded in 2010 by LG, Samsung, Sony Pictures, and Valens Semiconductor.

The primary advantage of HDBaseT is its ability to extend HDMI, USB, RS-232, and other signals over long distances without signal degradation, making it a preferred choice in professional AV installations, home theater systems, digital signage, and industrial applications.

How HDBaseT Works

HDBaseT technology operates over standard Ethernet cables, but it does not rely on traditional network protocols such as TCP/IP. Instead, it uses 5Play™, a unique feature set that integrates five key functionalities into a single cable:

  1. Video & Audio – Supports uncompressed 4K UHD and HDR video transmission over long distances, ensuring high-quality audio-visual performance.
  2. Ethernet – Provides up to 100 Mbps Ethernet connectivity for IP-based devices.
  3. Control Signals – Supports RS-232, IR (infrared), and CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) for seamless device management.
  4. USB – Enables KVM (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) applications and interactive displays.
  5. Power over HDBaseT (PoH) – Delivers up to 100W of power, reducing the need for additional power cables.

Important Note: HDBaseT does not operate over IP networks

Unlike HDMI over IP solutions, HDBaseT does not transmit data using standard network protocols or Ethernet switches. Instead, it requires direct point-to-point connections using Cat5e/6/7 cables, ensuring low latency and uncompressed video transmission but without the flexibility of IP-based distribution.

HDBaseT as an HDMI Extender

One of the most popular applications of HDBaseT is as an HDMI Extender. Traditional HDMI cables have limitations in distance, typically supporting up to 50 feet (15 meters) before experiencing signal loss or requiring an active repeater. HDBaseT solves this problem by allowing HDMI signals to be transmitted up to 328 feet (100 meters) over Cat6 cables while maintaining full 4K UHD resolution.

Benefits of Using HDBaseT HDMI Extenders:

  • Extended Range – Transmit HDMI signals over longer distances without degradation.
  • Single-Cable Solution – Reduces cable clutter by combining video, audio, Ethernet, control, and power in one cable.
  • Compatibility – Works with a wide range of AV devices, including projectors, video walls, gaming setups, and professional AV installations.
  • No Latency – Ensures real-time signal transmission, making it ideal for gaming and live events.
  • Cost-Effective – Uses inexpensive and widely available Cat5e/Cat6/Cat7 cables instead of expensive HDMI fiber cables.

Use Cases of HDBaseT Technology

1. Home Theater and Residential AV

HDBaseT simplifies home theater setups by allowing centralized AV equipment to be stored in a different room while extending HDMI, audio, and control signals to a TV or projector seamlessly.

2. Commercial AV and Digital Signage

Businesses use HDBaseT for video walls, interactive displays, and conference rooms, reducing the number of required cables and ensuring high-quality video transmission.

3. Industrial and Medical Applications

In medical imaging, security systems, and control rooms, HDBaseT is used to transmit high-resolution video with zero latency, essential for real-time monitoring and diagnostics.

4. Gaming and eSports

Professional gamers and streamers rely on low-latency HDMI extensions to maintain 4K 120Hz performance without lag, enhancing the gaming experience.
